Did you know that the bucolic green often associated with Ireland and the patron saint historically was not affiliated with that color? The Order of St. Patrick is associated with the color blue.
And Saint Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Wales.
“Also, Saint Patrick is not the only patron saint of Ireland,” says Paula Stokes, a native of Ireland now living in Seattle. “He is one of three, together with Saint Brigid (her feast day is Feb. 1), and Saint Columba.”
Furthermore, St. Patrick’s Day is a somber occasion recognized with quiet prayer at home or in church, far from the bacchanalia exercised state-side today.
For Seattlites looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, here are some suggestions.
- Mulleady’s Irish Pub in Magnolia, regularly closed Mondays, will open for the holiday for guests 21 and over starting at 1 p.m. and stay open late. It will offer its popular all ages weekend brunch until 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and will stay open until midnight both days.
